OK so while they stopped killing villains after the negative reception to (and utter denial of) Chrysalis and Sombra's deaths, at least they used redemption for Discord and Sunset Shimmer and imprisonment for Tirek. The next two villains after him, the Dazzlings and Starlight Glimmer, just run off without any of the three official villain defeats, even though the Dazzlings are de-powered

It is for this precise reason that Meghan didn't kill her next three villains. Well, Sunset Shimmer isn't really the villain you'd expect to be killed in this show, but Tirek and the Dazzlings are. Tirek is imprisoned and the Dazzlings run away (and both are de-powered).

And MLP isn't the only show. Aside from the MCU and 24, virtually any show you can think of isn't killing off any main villains before.

And this wasn't the reaction Meghan expected when she killed Chrysalis and Sombra (people were always in denial about Chrysalis even before the comics, which I go by as non-canon, came out, besides it was also for that reason that she even returned in the comics). She killed Chrysalis in a subtle way for us bronies and pegasisters so we'd say "Chrysalis is dead, they killed a villain in this show, this show isn't afraid to do that!" (after all, Nightmare Moon was first episode and was a corrupted version of her original self, and it makes sense that the Elements would do the same thing to Discord that they did the first time) And when no one considered that possibility, she was completely up front with Sombra, even confirming his death in an interview. But instead two things were always said about Sombra: "He was a lame villain" and "I'm disappointed that they killed him off". (putting it mildly because Meghan received death threats)

No one expect another main villain to be killed in MLP. Meghan gave that to us twice and no one (except me) appreciated it because no one seems to like that anymore. That old-fashioned ending is dying out.

Honestly I was disappointed with Sombra's appearance. Don't think I'm saying disappointed with him, but he's this tyrannical and evil unicorn who gets five lines, seven minutes of showtime and defeated easily. He had so much potential and is just beaten so easily.

King Sombra is so underestimated. The only reason he didn't get into the Crystal Empire was because Cadance projected a barrier around the Crystal Empire. Shining Armor could have done the same but Sombra countered his spell, and that was before encrusting his horn with dark crystals. He is the most competent and intelligent villain in the show because he planned everything ahead and set traps that would have defeated Twilight on more than one occasion if Spike hadn't been there. And he would have impaled Spike and taken the Crystal Heart if Shining Armor hadn't thrown Cadance, who despite being severely weakened was able to save him and destroy Sombra. If Sombra had the chance to do more he could have killed the Mane 6 and done more damage, as it's implied he was going to destroy the Crystal Empire this time. People only think of Tirek as more evil and a bigger threat because we see more of him and what he does, but he is definitely second on both lists.

And why is it that people are disappointed that Sombra was killed off when they hate him so much? What happened to the days of Star Trek when everyone was sure that the fan-favorite hero (as opposed to least favorite villain) would return from the dead (which he did)?

Not to mention that before all this, THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO, it required the combined strength of the Regal Sisters to best him and imprison him.

Also there's a weird theory that when Twilight found that door, she never broke free from the spell, and all that she's seeing is a nightmare on its way.

Cadence just drained her energy in a shield, that doesn't count. Besides compared to the other villains, I think he had the least amount of effort put into him. But that's just my opinion.

I still argue he's severely underrated. But that's mainly Faust's fault.

Her only good work, but couldn't they have saved such a fantastic villain for later, or atleast not show what he looks like until the end? Atleast he will be back for sure in season 5

Raven: She drained her energy in a shield, which bought Twilight enough time to get to the Crystal Heart. But that's not very important, is it? Hey, Doc! Can you take us back in time with the TARDIS so that we can tell Cadance that she really doesn't need to form up that shield? I mean, obviously, it wasn't a very important factor in beating Sombra!

Dr. X: Oh, yes. It was absolutely meaningless. There was no purpose for that.

That was just prediction. When I saw the villain, I predicted Tirek and here I am. Guess a little theory can go a long way after all.

He did go down in a very Sauron like way (the way he started glowing then exploded), which was pretty epic thinking about it. I do hope he isn't dead and comes back better than ever.

It wasn't the first time in MLP. Even if you think Chrysalis survived, G1 killed Tirek and Lavan. No supernatural show that has a villain as dark as him should be afraid of doing that. But now it is, because of all the disappointed reactions (and, in some cases, denial) to Sombra's death. Chrysalis and Sombra were the first two villains to come from Meghan McCarthy, and after the Sombra thing, look at Sunset Shimmer, Tirek, and the Dazzlings. One reformed, one imprisoned, and one run off. How much you want to bet Season 5 villain either reforms or runs off?

if you listen you can hear him screaming in rage even after he is destroyed and also, some say his intelligence, personality, and consciousness survived because his horn remained intact.

Tell that to the fish Fluttershy killed, and the Windigos that burned to death (that sound effect was likely caused by Celestia to break up their fight, because they never threatened to return in Look Before You Sleep). I no longer count Nightmare Moon as a separate entity from Luna but I stand by Chrysalis fell to her death (they were just more subtle with her and very few people believe she is dead because they like her so much, though comics aside they might not need to as she has been outclassed in all areas by either Tirek or the Dazzlings)

Of the main villains (not counting Plunderseeds), Chrysalis and Sombra are the only two villains to be killed, but Sombra is the only one whose death was confirmed. I actually get the feeling that family-friendly shows are more likely to kill off main villains than mature shows are (maybe people think of killing the main villain as too "kid show-y", despite the fact that some mature shows have done it, sometimes in gruesome ways (like Spartacus)), but MLP decided to stop when they decided bronies didn't want villains killed off on account of raging over the confirmed death of their least favorite villain (namely Sombra), imagine how they'd react if Tirek had shared the fate of his G1 counterpart instead of being imprisoned in hell, or if the Dazzlings had shattered to pieces instead of their astral projections (and they are fan-favorite villain now, overtaking Discord on that list can be no small feat, as he retained popularity even after his redemption)

I'm actually quite the opposite with that philosophy - no family-friendly show is too "kid show-y" for me if it kills off a main villain. To me that's a sign it's not too prissy to do so. Of course that's not a prerequisite, I got into the show for completely different reasons and long before the Chrysalis episode (or before I temporarily came to suspect Nightmare Moon as a separate entity from Luna)
